Meet The Makers is an immersive experience where you witness local artisans transform everyday waste into stunning, functional art. Watch as a wine bottle is skillfully turned into a drinking glass and an old shampoo bottle is shredded using a human-powered bike shredder. At Chako—a green, social enterprise in Zanzibar—uneducated and unemployed youth, predominantly women (65%), are trained to upcycle materials, turning waste from the tourism industry into beautiful creations. Through meticulous processes of washing, cutting, and carving glass, plastic, and wood, each piece reflects the unique craft(wo)manship of Zanzibar. Moreover, every paid tour includes a free community awareness tour on sustainable waste management, inviting locals to join the circular economy movement.
